Route News

Water levels are continuing to recede and are almost below normal levels – despite the temporary flooding experienced a month ago. The path is in an excellent condition considering the time of year.

For a full list of problem spots that we are aware of, please refer to our route alerts page.

You may recall that we shared a YouTube video some months back from Paul Whitewick concerning the theory that the source of the Thames is not just past Kemble but is, in fact, at Seven Springs, close to Cheltenham, and which is actually on the River Churn. This was based on the principle that a river should be measured from the estuary to its furthest tributary. The theory is that, since the River Churn is further from the estuary than the Thames Head, it should be the proper source and perhaps they should swap the names of the Churn and the Thames beyond Cotswold Water Park.

To add more complexity to the debate, in a recent video on YouTube, Paul looked at some of the tributaries flowing into the River Churn and realised that, if you applied that same principle of the furthest distance from the estuary, Seven Springs wasn’t the source. If you want to learn more, do watch the video.

Other diversions currently in place:

The weir at Benson Lock has been temporarily closed due to strong currents and debris creating a risk of damage. You will need to follow side roads through Crowmarsh Gifford. The route is well marked. The closure is likely to be in place until well into the spring.

Diversions remain in place around the closed boardwalk upstream from Marsh Lock, Henley. If walking downstream, there seems to be a sign missing: if you get to the fenced off boardwalk leading to Marsh Lock then you’ve missed the turn. There is a path leading to your left about 20 yards before the boardwalk.

Thames Path Passport

The 2023 edition of the Thames Path Passport is now out. The first passport was posted on Monday. We’ll be delivering stamps to the new stations throughout this week.

Something new that we’re trying this year is a virtual stamp. The idea is that the stamping stations have a window sticker with a unique QR code. This is in case the stamping station is closed.  If you point your camera at the QR code it will take you to a page on our website where you can tell us who you are (each passport will have a unique number) and we’ll know you were there. So, when you send your passport in your passport to claim your free certificate we’ll add these “missing stamps”.

The passport can be purchased from our online shop for £7.50. And a reminder that the purchase price includes a donation of £1.50 to the National Trails office towards the upkeep of the Path.

Laundry Service

Last year we piloted a laundry service. We are pleased to announce that this will be repeated. This is available to those on packages and/or use our bag transfer service. Here’s how it works:

Just let us know a day in advance and we will drop off laundry bags for you with your luggage. You need a separate bag for whites and coloureds.  Bags cost £20 and should weigh no more than 5kgs. There is a two-day working week turnaround. So,

  • Collect Monday; return Wednesday
  • Collect Tuesday; return Thursday
  • Collect Wednesday; return Friday
  • Collect Thursday; return Saturday
  • Collect Friday – Sunday; return Tuesday
Because of the turnaround, this probably won’t me a “spur of the moment” decision. But it might feature in your planning if walking for two weeks.

Events

A new exhibition has opened up at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. Entitled Labyrinth, Knossos, Myth & Reality, the exhibition explores the myth (or reality?) of the labyrinth that contained the minotaur at Knossos on the island of Crete. The exhibition runs until 30 July.

Somehow we missed this but The Stanley Spencer Gallery in Cookham has a winter exhibition running until 26 March entitled “Most Loved Works”, featuring paintings chosen by the volunteers. Presently the gallery is open from  Thursday to Sunday only and from 11am to 4.30 pm

The Globe Theatre has published its summer schedule which features A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Comedy of Errors, and As You Like It. For those unfamiliar with the Globe, this is a replica of what Shakespeare’s original theatre would have looked like and sits directly on the Thames Path between Westminster Bridge and Tower Bridge. More details can be found here.

Also new is The Gunpowder Plot, an “immersive experience” held at The Tower of London and running until at least September. This will transport you back in time to 1605 and the plot by Guy Fawkes to blow up the Houses of Parliament. Tickets are available as early as 11am so can be included within a walk.

Tickets are now on sale for Henley Festival which takes place between July 5 and 9. Expect accommodation to be hard to find during that week and also the preceding week which will be the Regatta. The festival features, amongst others, Rag’n’Bone Man, Westlife, Nile Rodgers & CHIC.

Something to look forward to in April at the Tate is an exhibition of work by the Rossetti family: Dante, Gabriel and Elisabeth. Readers may be aware that Dante Rossetti shared Kelmscott Manor with William Morris.

Hospitality News

The Flower Pot at Aston was supposed to open with new landlords on February 1. Following an unhelpful conversation with Brakspear’s brewery in nearby Henley, who referred us to a website with no information, we decided to pay a visit to the pub where we gleaned far more knowledge from the onsite workers. So The Flower Pot is currently undergoing renovation which should be completed in April. However, the  rooms are also due to be renovated but this will be later, possibly May. So we don’t think there’s much chance of any accommodation until June.

Sticking with Henley for a moment, you might be interested to know that hotel prices on the weekend of Henley Regatta (Fri/Sat June 30-July 1) are in excess of £1,000. So do bear that in mind when planning your Thames Path walk.

Become a Sherpa: Baggage Transfers in London

We are still looking for occasional help to move bags in the London area: from Kew/Brentford down to Woolwich. We pay our “sherpas” mileage and time. If interested, please email us at info@walkthethames.co.uk
Fancy becoming a sherpa?

That’s all folks. See you on the trail!
