North Meadow, Cricklade comes alive in spring with the arrival of the largest collection of Snake Head Fritillaries in the UK. It is therefore unfortunate that the Thames Path makes only a brief trip through the Meadow.
There are three alternatives to choose from, none of which make any discernible difference to the distance walked, as shown in the map above. Note that the alternative paths marked in red are not shown on the OS maps because they are not public rights of way.
Option 1: when the Thames Path leaves North Meadow at a narrow gate, turn left and follow the path parallel to the river. You can rejoin the Thames Path close to the weir by crossing a field (public right of way). Hardly any distance added.
Option 2 is to follow option 1 but, instead of turning right to the weir, follow the meadow path to your left to Weaver’s Bridge. Follow the road to Cricklade.
Option 3 is the best. On entering North Meadow follow the path that heads to your left and skirts the north-eastern edge of the meadow taking you to Weaver’s Bridge. This is where the best fritillaries can be found.
Impact on distance: None
The map also shows the bad weather route as the field prior to North Meadow is frequently flooded. This route is the old railway and is also National Cycle Route 45.
