Thames Path News Round-Up

June 8, 2023

Once again apologies for another long gap. We’ve had a very busy May supporting an average of 20 walkers per day. The weather has been very kind throughout most of the month and the path is mostly dry.

There are a few stubborn spots where the April floods have still to subside. And there has been another footbridge closed, this time at Temple Lock. Details can be seen in route news section below.

The weather is warm, the days are long, the flowers are out, and the river is looking magnificent: whether near the source or down in London.

Past Tower Bridge

Route News

There remain two flood spots on the Thames Path. The first is Ewen where the river has burst its banks. Ordinarily this would not be a problem. However, the farmer has put up a barbed-wire fence creating a narrow riverside corridor which prevents finding an alternative way around. As of today, the path is just about navigable providing you’re fairly nimble: staying dry requires balancing on logs, presumably positioned by well-intentioned walkers; and traversing along the horizontal sections of the fence.

The second is the usual trouble spot of the field before North Meadow. This can be avoided by following the disused railway track, now Cycle Route 45, into Cricklade.

North Meadow re-opened this week although whether there are any fritillaries to be seen is doubtful.

The diversion at Benson is set to be in place for a long time, at least for the duration of this year. This diversion is in place because the bridge over the weir is deemed to be unsafe. A boat service started up ferrying walkers across the river to Benson Lock thus avoiding the diversion. Unfortunately the service has been rather intermittent. We spoke to Bygone Boating who run the service. It seems that the boat purchased for this venture had some issues and they have since purchased a replacement. So normal service should be resumed very soon. Also, the ferry is manned by volunteers of which there are few. If you are local, why not give a few hours a week?

A new diversion was put in place during the month, this time at Temple Lock, just past Hurley. Once again, the bridge has been deemed to be unsafe. So, instead of crossing the river onto the left bank and walking into Marlow, you must follow paths, lanes and then a road on the right bank through Bisham and into Marlow. We’ve also had reports that some of the temporary signposts have been wantonly repositioned. In fact, we visited the diversion today and found no signs at all. If in doubt, take the footpath to the right before the bridge and then take the first left. Another reason why you should always have a map.

It is, of course, possible to cross the river at Hambledon Lock and follow paths on the left bank through Medmenham and all the way to Marlow. It’s a little convoluted but avoids walking on the road through Bisham.

Further details can be seen on our website. We try to keep this page current so, in the absence of a newsletter, please refer to this.

Other diversions currently in place:

The river bank has collapsed on a short stretch between Swinford Bridge and Eynsham Lock. The Path is closed whilst repairs are undertaken. This was supposed to last about 3 weeks but must now be in month 3 of being repaired. A diversion is in place. Walk 100 yards along the road and away from the bridge. There is a path to your left which will take you back to the river and beyond the collapsed bank.

Diversions remain in place around the closed boardwalk upstream from Marsh Lock, Henley. If walking downstream, there seems to be a sign missing: if you get to the fenced off boardwalk leading to Marsh Lock then you’ve missed the turn. There is a path leading to your left about 20 yards before the boardwalk.

The beautiful Temple Bridge, sadly closed for the foreseeable future

Events

Preparations are well underway for Henley Regatta which takes place between June 27 and July 2. This is followed by Henley Festival  from July 5 to July 9. Expect accommodation in and around Henley during this time to be almost impossible to find.

Later in July is Kew the Music, a series of evening picnic concerts within Kew Gardens from July 11 to 16. The line-up includes Jack Savoretti, the Human League, and the fabulous Jools Holland. More details here.

If anyone is staying in Sonning on June 19, then check out the Bull which is hosting “Opera in the Garden” . It’s part of a larger program being run by Fullers pubs. Other Thames Path venues include the Queens Head at Kingston and the Anglers at Teddington. See here for more details.

Sadly the Lechlade Music Festival, scheduled for the last week of May, never happened. It was cancelled due to a soggy field!

Repeated:

The Ashmolean Museum in Oxford has an exhobition entitled Labyrinth, Knossos, Myth & Reality, the exhibition explores the myth (or reality?) of the labyrinth that contained the minotaur at Knossos on the island of Crete. The exhibition runs until 30 July.

The Tate is hosting an exhibition of work by the Rossetti family: Dante, Gabriel and Elisabeth. Readers may be aware that Dante Rossetti shared Kelmscott Manor with William Morris.

Regatta training, Leander Club, Henley

Accommodation News

A warning that the price of hotel rooms in Oxford during July is becoming very expensive, especially at weekends.

The Crown at Cookham has completed its renovations and is now open. Although we haven’t been in yet, we have passed it on occasion and, judging by the numbers of people sitting at the outside tables, it seems to be very popular. Looking at the prices we will put this on our planner at bronze.

With the warm weather, the thought of sleeping under canvas may attract some. But many are put off by the thought of carrying a tent, sleeping bag and cooking equipment. So you may be interested to know that, this summer, we’re piloting bag transfers between campsites, thus allowing you to walk without a heavy load. We should stress that our service does not include putting up your tent!

In view of the Temple Bridge closure, should you wish to follow the left bank you might consider stopping at the Dog and Badger in Medmenham. Note that they are not currently serving any breakfast which means a 4 mile walk to Marlow in the morning.

Transport

Rail strikes caused significant disruption to travel schedules at the end of May and in early June. At present there are no further rail strikes planned – although that may change.

Another problem that walkers have experienced in the Nuneham viaduct. This carries the railway line across the Thames between Didcot Parkway and Oxford. The viaduct is unsafe and emergency repairs have been going since April meaning that rail travellers must disembark and take a rail replacement bus between Didcot and Oxford. Network Rail have said that they are on schedule to complete the works by June 10. The Thames Path is unaffected by the works.

That’s all folks. See you on the trail.
