The last few days have turned out to be extremely wet with 2023 being the wettest March for some 40 years with 30mm falling on Friday. There are flood alerts in place throughout the river. Water levels have risen and paths are under water in many sections. It’s impossible for us to report on all 180 miles of the path but we understand that the worst sections are towards the source. Although the next few days are predicted to be dry, the river will continue to rise and is likely to peak in the next 2-3 days. Refer to our route alerts page for more up-to-date information as we become aware of it. If planning on walking, look for alternative routes in case it’s flooded. Also, if walking through the flood plain, keep a good distance from the actual river.
Our season has now officially started although our first intrepid walkers don’t start walking until Wednesday, by which time we hope the river levels will have subsided. We used our last opportunity to get away before the season starts and spend a couple of days away in Upper Swaledale, North Yorkshire where two paths meet: the Coast to Coast and the Pennine Way.

Events
If you’ve watched the first episode of Great Expectations on BBC1 you’ll have seen that the opening scene, supposedly set in London, is actually of Marlow Bridge. Available on catch-up.
Abingdon Museum has a new exhibition on quilts. The museum can be found in the County Hall where, for a small fee, you can climb on the rooftop for some glorious Oxfordshire views.
Repeated:
The Ashmolean Museum in Oxford has an exhobition entitled Labyrinth, Knossos, Myth & Reality, the exhibition explores the myth (or reality?) of the labyrinth that contained the minotaur at Knossos on the island of Crete. The exhibition runs until 30 July.
Dorchester Abbey is hosting Mozart’s Requiem performed by the Orchestra of St John’s on April 7. Full details can be found here.
Reading is hosting a walking festival between May 10 and 14. The festival will include local walks as well as a guided walk along the Thames Path as far as Goring. More details here.
The Tate is hosting an exhibition of work by the Rossetti family: Dante, Gabriel and Elisabeth. Readers may be aware that Dante Rossetti shared Kelmscott Manor with William Morris.
The Royal Mews has opened. This can be found next to Buckingham Palace and houses the collection of Royal carriages including the Gold State Coach which will be used in the upcoming Coronation. It can be reached in less than a mile by turning left at Westminster Bridge, past Big Ben, and through St James’ Park.

Accommodation News
Quite a bit to report – mostly good
The Talbot at Eynsham has re-opened and is back offering rooms. The pub has been closed since October. We’ll pay them a visit this week as we’ll be passing by on our travels.
The Flowerpot at Aston is due to re-open this coming Easter weekend. However, rooms still need to be refurbished and we don’t have a date for that.
The Crown at Cookham is being renovated. This closed down towards the end of last year’s season – in fact the pub shut but they kept the accommodation going for a while leaving a rather strange experience for those who stayed.
And, finally, the Thames Riviera at Maidenhead is also now open. This used to be a rather busy (and noisy) hotel but was very quiet when we walked in, albeit just before lunch. The location is quite superb being on the river.
That’s quite a few rooms being added to availability! |
