Thames Path News Round-Up

March 18, 2023
Tadpole Bridge

Following a wet January and a dry February, we are now experiencing an unusually cold and wet March. River levels have risen but are still below normal. There are no flood alerts in place. Flowers are starting to bloom as are the gorgeous tree blossoms.

We’re now in the final preparation stage for the start of the season. Packs and bag labels have started to go out. We’re still waiting for our back order of the new Cicerone map booklet which has been delayed until April.

Route News

The river bank has collapsed on a short stretch between Swinford Bridge and Eynsham Lock. The Path is closed whilst repairs are undertaken. This is likely to last about 3 weeks.A diversion is in place. Walk 100 yards along the road and away from the bridge. There is a path to your left which will take you back to the river and beyond the collapsed bank.

The footbridge at Little Wittenham is under repair and therefore closed until early April. This means that there is no access to Wittenham Clumps or Shillingford detours from the Thames Path.

There’s been a development on the Marsh Lock diversion near Henley. We reported previously that the landowner, who had graciously agreed to allow a diversion over his land, was becoming impatient with the lack of progress by the Environment Agency on repairing the boardwalk and was threatening to withdraw his offer. Following a meeting with the Environment Agency and the National Trails office this threat has been withdrawn. More details of the diversion are shown below.

The Henley Toad Patrol is back. Around this time every year, thousands of toads make a perilous journey across the A4155 between Henley and Marlow heading to the river. At the last count 790 toads had been carried across in buckets.

A blue plaque has been installed at 149 Lower Road, Rotherhithe , where Ada Salter was born in 1846. Salter was a social reformer and local politician. There is a small statue of her and her family on the Thames Path as you approach Rotherhithe

Other diversions currently in place:

The weir at Benson Lock has been temporarily closed due to strong currents and debris creating a risk of damage. You will need to follow side roads through Crowmarsh Gifford. The route is well marked. The closure is likely to be in place until well into the spring.

Diversions remain in place around the closed boardwalk upstream from Marsh Lock, Henley. If walking downstream, there seems to be a sign missing: if you get to the fenced off boardwalk leading to Marsh Lock then you’ve missed the turn. There is a path leading to your left about 20 yards before the boardwalk.

Little Wittenham footbridge – currently closed for repairs

Webinars

Our next webinar will be on March 21 and will be Thames Path: Staines to Thames Barrier/Woolwich. This is followed by our last of the season which is an overview of The Ridgeway. Webinars are held every Tuesday at 8pm (GMT) and are completely free. All webinars are via Zoom and last for one hour. And you don’t need a Zoom account to join! However, you will need to register to be get the dial in details.

Events

The Royal Mews has opened. This can be found next to Buckingham Palace and houses the collection of Royal carriages including the Gold State Coach which, we understand, will be used in the upcoming Coronation. Admittedly not quite on the Thames Path, it can be reached in less than a mile by turning left at Westminster Bridge, past Big Ben, and through St James’ Park.

Repeated:

A new exhibition has opened up at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. Entitled Labyrinth, Knossos, Myth & Reality, the exhibition explores the myth (or reality?) of the labyrinth that contained the minotaur at Knossos on the island of Crete. The exhibition runs until 30 July.

Dorchester Abbey is hosting Mozart’s Requiem performed by the Orchestra of St John’s on April 7. Full details can be found here.

The Stanley Spencer Gallery in Cookham has a winter exhibition running until 26 March entitled “Most Loved Works”, featuring paintings chosen by the volunteers. Presently the gallery is open from  Thursday to Sunday only and from 11am to 4.30 pm

Reading
is hosting a walking festival between May 10 and 14. The festival will include local walks as well as a guided walk along the Thames Path as far as Goring. More details here.

The Globe Theatre has published its summer schedule which features A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Comedy of Errors, and As You Like It. For those unfamiliar with the Globe, this is a replica of what Shakespeare’s original theatre would have looked like and sits directly on the Thames Path between Westminster Bridge and Tower Bridge. More details can be found here.

The Tate is hosting an exhibition of work by the Rossetti family: Dante, Gabriel and Elisabeth. Readers may be aware that Dante Rossetti shared Kelmscott Manor with William Morris.

The Royal Mews is adjacent to Buckingham Palace

The Ridgeway Journey Planner

As you may already know, we are now supporting The Ridgeway via our sister website Walking Holiday. We have finally managed to get the Journey Planner working for this walk. We’d love you to join and take a look. You will need to register separately to use this site.

Appeal

Finally we have a huge ASK. As you know these newsletters are free and we intend to keep it so. Up until now, it has not cost us anything to create and distribute the newsletters other than our time which we gladly give. Unfortunately, the service that we have been using to create and send, Mailchimp, has now decided to start charging. The annual cost is approaching £300. So we are raising a short appeal to ask for donations to keep this free service running. We are particularly appealing to those who value the newsletters but have not had need of our paid services.

The Donate button below will take you to our website where you can make a donation of any amount via Paypal. You don’t need a Paypal account to make a contribution. Thank you.

That’s all folks. See you on the trail!
